can't get itunes to work on new laptop

I've just bought an Acer 5920G laptop. When I download itunes 8, it won't run on the laptop and I get a message saying "Windows Installer. This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the product exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package." What am I doing wrong? Laptop is running Vista home premium.
