taking a Conversion

After scoring a try, when taking the conversion ...

Does the kicker have to place the ball for his kick?

Or can he take a drop kick?

He can do either. Also, and it's hardly ever done, the team scoring the try doesn't have to take the conversion. I've only ever seen this done on a couple of occasions where the team that was winning had to win the match by a certain number of tries and in order to allow themselves ore time to score those tries they didn't bother with conversions as they would take up time!!

dropkick conversion more often done in '7 s' - as osprey says ,it is a time thing

Actually, taking a drop-kick is now Law in 7's.

That's right ...

... and Osprey has also answered the next question I was going to post (when would a team not bother taking the conversion).
