Merry Christmas zzxxee,
I reckon there are all sorts of reasons why people do not keep contact with their elderly relatives, not all of them selfish. Some elderly folk can be a real pain and give their families a hard time just for the hell of it! Just think about it and I am sure you will see what I mean.

There are reasons why some old folk in homes don't get to see their relatives very often. i.e. if they live too far away. What I think zzxxee is getting at are those families who do live close enough but just do not bother. In some cases it is out of sight, out of mind and this is downright selfish. It's as though getting old is an inconvenience. They will get old themselves one day. How would they like it if their own children treated them like that. I know from having contact with old people, some of their relatives hardly ever visit and these old folks are heartbroken. Some may be cantankerous, but not all.
I think distance is just an excuse. In the US people will cross states bigger then England to go and visit their family. It's all a case of how dedicated you are to your family. There is no excuse if someone can come to pick their dead realatives belongings but they can't come visit them because they can't make time.... what a waist of life. I've taken care of my sick grandparents since I left highschool! I'm sure they could do something for their family!
