We worked for the Dept Of Work & Pensions at Liverpool Pension Centre; one of 10 pension centres throughout the country. The office was closed on 30 March with the loss of over 250 jobs in one of Liverpool's poorest areas. Unfortunately we do not receive a great deal of sympathy as some people view us as faceless penpushers who sit around drinking tea all day doing little else when in reality our job involved ensuring that pensioners received all the benefit they were entitled to and making a real difference in their lives (for crap wages I may add although thats another story!!)
It is my understanding that 100,000 jobs will be cut in total (40,000 from Dept Work & Pensions and when the Inland Revenue merges with Customs, 40,000 from Whitehall and 20,000 by relocating work to other areas where costs are lower) These cuts are on a rolling basis up to the year 2008.
