Venice
I'm thinking of booking a weekend away in Venice. I don't know much about it but looking on a map it appears that the airport is on the mainland and a road connects to Venice? Is it close enough to get a taxi? Any tips on which area to stay in would also be great.

You could get a water taxi (horrendously expensive).
You can get a taxi or bus from the airport which will take you to the ferry terminal for the island.
Whichever of these you use it's then a walk to your hotel.
If it's a Ryanair flight it's a different airport miles inland - there is a bus.

A water taxi from Marco Polo Airport, for 1 to 4 persons, costs either 98 or 118 depending upon which city centre hotel you're travelling to:

A land taxi would cost in the region of 40 to 50.
The (very frequent) bus service might be a better option:

As Dzug indicates, a land taxi will only take you as far as the Piazzale Roma (which is where the buses also terminate). From there you've either got to walk (or possibly take a water bus).
As has been indicated, Ryanair fly into Treviso airport, which is 30km from Venice. ATVO operate a fairly cheap bus service from there:
