the mass unemployment was caused the the unions going on strike continually for more and more money and conditions, smaller companies could not survive all this especially with secondary picketting which thatcher made illegal. thatcher got in because of the high unemployment, she broke the unions stranglehold as the demands they were making were too much for the companies who could not afford to put money into research and development, which killed off a lot of large companies
