Partitions.

my hdd is partitioned into two equal sections. the hdd is in constant use and i would like to move the partition without losing any data. i am using xp. how can i do this? is there any free software that will do it for me?

There is software to do this, but it is not free and can be expensive. Try Partition Magic, though this can be pricey. Why not have a look for a new or used one on Ebay or Amazon?

I think the question needs a bit of clarification. Where do you want to move the partition too? another drive or are you creating a new partition or are you deleting a partition and just having the one?

sorry for the confusion. i would like to move the partition on the same hdd. at the moment it is splitting a 40gb hdd into two 20gb's. i would like to move the partition to split it into a 30gb and a 10gb.

There is no way of altering the partitions in Windows XP without losing your data. As b.craig points out there is software available. You can get trials of various programs, but not all will give you full program access until you buy them. Try downloading BootItNG. The trial version is fully functional.

Alternatively if you look through the computer magazines at your local newsagents you may find a free, fully functional, copy of something like Partition Magic. It won't be the latest version, but should do what you require.
