can a shop sell me something for one price and someone else for another

Do you mean that the shop sold an item to you for a particular price and then sold the same item to another customer for a different price? If so then I suppose they can if they want to as it is up to them what they charge for all their stock.

I don't know if it's legal but I live in a tourist resort and some shops/museums/cafes etc will charge the tourists more than the locals.

Discounts are very common - club discounts, bulk discounts, trade discounts, loyalty discounts....

A shop can change its prices up or down at any time

under consumer legislation here in ireland all prices must be clearly displayed

At the moment in the uk asdas and tescos and some other retailers are discounting 2.5% vat after the budget change

Yes, pink, but a customer can have a card or fob that entitles him to a discount at the checkout.

I get 10% off everything at a lot of shops just for being over 60.

as buildersmate says, yes they can.

and as he's probably involved in the building trade he will know that there is often a system of discounts which are different to each trader.

BUT...

If they are being discriminatory, or are selling above the recommended price, or at a different price to what was displayed, then you may have a case.

If it's a major purchase then check with CAB or similar, if it's something small, I would forget it.

doesnt work like that here Ethel prices must be displayed including any discounts . The over 60's dont get discount unless via a voucher from social welfare etc. Students get a discount in some stores but they have a sign in the window. There is certain days its cheaper for over 60 say in salons but that must be specified

There is nothing to stop anybody haggling for a discount - there is nothing illegal in that

Don't you have Focus that gives over 60s a discount card? They also give new home owners a discount card valid for 12 months.

Or how about wholesalers? Discounts given on the amount of spend in the previous 12 months.

ROI no we dont have focus but social welfarre gives OAPs free travel, TV licence, medical card, fuel/phone allowance etc

Ah - that explains it. I know Safeway used to give discount cards to pensioners in Northern Ireland - there was a big uproar when they stopped

Shop keepers own their stock and can sell at whatever price they want. It's for the customer to agree to pay or not.....end of!
