However, Bathsheba2's suggestion of right-clicking on the printer icon is the usual starting point. Then click 'Properties'. From then on the exact procedure will depend upon the make and model of your printer. With my Canon printer I click 'Maintenance' and then 'Start Status Monitor'. There should be something similar, under 'Properties', for your make of printer.
