My class leader lost 8 stone in just under a year, and has kept it off. i know people that have lost 2 -4 stone also. Personally i have lost just under a stone in 9 months. ( i have been also doing a lot of exercise so my body shape has also changed). I would recommend it. As they say in class its not a diet - its a healthy living plan, and would certainly agree with that. I can't imagine eating pastry again. It changes you eating habits completly. Go for it.
I don't think that Slimming World teaches you particularly good eating habits. Lots of processed foods are "unlimited" and it does not deal with the issue of over-eating, by promising you will "never be hungry". This way you can continually eat, which is surely not a rule to lose weight by. I did lose 2 stone on this diet years ago. But it didn't teach me anything. I was eating tinned macaroni cheese (no nutrients!) and ravioli- far too many carbs as I didn't like the "original" days. I did find that I lost far more weight on the Original days- since you eat mainly protein. Now I know more about all diets, I lost 4 stone last year simply by eating 3 meals a day, listening to my hunger signals and not overeating. I also now avoid wheat and dairy and FEEL much better physically. Slimming World does work if you stick to it, like most diets, but does not deal with the issue of greed. Thin people actually don't eat that much, and this diet allows you to eat as much as you want. This way it is difficult to switch off from thinking about food.
I agree with Scarlett, i'm not denying you can have tremendous success on it, but it does encourage bad eating habits - namely overeating.
I tried it, but i got bored, although you can be flexible i found i was eating the same things constantly, no matter how much i tried to vary my diet. My sister in law is married to a slimming world leader, and she is always moaning about eating the same boring foods.
I had much more success on my own. Lots of websites do free healthy meal ideas and exercise plans for beginners. I'd save yourself the monthly fee and go it alone, if you can. If you're worried about lack of motivation, maybe you could buddy up with a friend or family member and you can encourage each other.

The only real way to lose weight , is to eat less and exercise more, however this doesn't sell books or slimming foods. The diet does work but it does get boring and it does encourage bad habits. It is better to increase your exercise and reduce the amount you eat by eating sensibly.
The other down side is the cost of classes, if you miss one you still have to pay, if you need this type of encouragement then it may work for you, however, you would probably be better using the money on gym membership or swimming.

years ago I weighed in at 12 stone 11 and a half pounds. I am 5 ft 7". I joined slimmimg world and was literally their star pupil, losing almost 3 stones in bout 9 months. I lived, slept and dreamt slimming world. It cost me a lot extra as I was living on fresh meat, fresh fruits (not the cheap stuff) smoked salmon, scrambled eggs etc. I looked amazing and got a bit of a kick out of depriving myself of cakes, booze and choccies. Everyone told me how great I looked and I went from a size 18 to a size 12.
Then the leader changed and I got bored with the plan.....I am now 11 stones 7 pounds and it depresses me so much. At least I did not put it all back on but its so hard to go back to it and I dont want to eat like that forever...it is a pain when you have to cook seperately for the rest of the family as well. Not of my amazing new clothes fit me and I am back to squeezing into a 14 (just!)
Less food, more restraint and some will powere is what you need and increased exercise! There is no easy way to doing it.
And before all you slimmimg world devotees have a crack at me...dont bother...this is MY personal experience!
