have gas heating and it doesnt seem to heat to the same temperature sometimes bottom of radiator not as hot any ideas

the starting point is bleeding the radiators.

after that it's balancing, and stuff that is beyond me!

Definitely not needing bleeding then. More likley sludge in the centre of the bottom of the rad.

What is it with this obsession with believing that bleeding radiators cures all ills?

Bleed your radiater system, nearest to your heater first. I am sure that will solve

Buidersmate is right.

Bleeding only releases air, but if the radiators have air in them, it is the top that stays cold.

Are all the radiators the same or is it just a few?

a) Turn up the water temperature. You should have a dial or such for that somewhere on your boiler.

b) There is an inlet & outlet tap on rads. Feel the pipe feeding the inlet. If its hotter than rad then open tap.

if the top of the radiator is hot (not luke warm) but the bottom is cold then it's almost certainly down to a sludge build up in the radiator.
