why is Polly short for Mary!
its not short for margaret, it is a nickname for margaret, like Jack is for John
The shortened name for Margaret used to be Meggie or Meggy in the middle ages and somehow got changed to Peggy
Because she's got little legs, and my name's Natalie not Margaret LOL

Why is Jack short for John?

....if it's a nickname................then.....who's Nick?
That's very mild Doc lol
I think it is a cross between Pearl which is also a derivative of Margaret and Meggie.

I think that Margater is the greek version of Peral or something like that.

It's weird how these things come about isn't it?

I think that it was really to distinguish people from each other back in the days when we used a smaller variety of names and every 2nd girl was either Margaret or Elizabeth, so we then had all these other names to tell them apart e.g Meg, Meggie, greta, rita, peggy, pearl, Maggie ,Margie etc.

I once got involved with a Scottish lass called Nan.

Apparently it's short for Agnes.

Yes, I thought it strange too
This is why.

In search from A to Z they passed,
And "Marguerita" chose at last;
But thought it sound far more sweet
To call the baby "Marguerite."
When grandma saw the little pet,
She called her "darling Margaret."
Next uncle Jack and cousin Aggie
Sent cup and spoon to "little Maggie."
And grandpapa the right must beg
To call the lassie "bonnie Meg."
From "Marguerita" down to "Meg,"
And now she's simply "little Peg."
