Warning - my message is going to sound very pesimistic.

Social services may be "allowing" her to foster the child now, but when push comes to shove I don't think they'll let the adoption go through. They'll put all kinds of problems in the way (e.g. so you fell out with your brother 8 years ago, why was that?.....Can we arrange a meeting and find out his side of the story etc etc). They may give that as the reason for turning her down, but the truth is these bl88dy do gooders will probably think she's too old!!!

They may have told her it is looking good, though I wouldn't count my chickens. Please be supportive of your friend (especially if she is let down by SS) but be aware of the points I've made.

Congratulations, I hope it all works out for her and the little girl.
But on a GOOD note, I know someone very well who was allowed to adopt not one, but two boys, and she was older than your friend.
so pleased for your friend, i hope everything goes smoothly for her :-)
Lorri - she wanted children for years and years, and sadly couldn't have them herself. I don't think she'd care WHAT happened now. Even bad days are fantastic ones.
