How to download ds games

Hi there, I have Games n' Music for the Nintendo DS. I have downloaded several games with the prefix .NDS, and transfered them onto the MicroSD Card. However, when I try to play the game the screens just turn white and nothing comes on. DO I need to download sometihng called a ROM or an emulator??? Help!!! CONFUSED!!!

Games n' Music is the 'official' nintendo card that allows you to store homebrew games onto and then play them.
