It was not a telephone line but a telegraphic cable which operates on a system somewhat similar to a very much simplified morse code system. The receiving terminal for Bombay can still be seen at Porthcurno together with a wall map showing how the (mainly sub-sea) cables linked from Bombay to Porthcurno. At the moment everything is still exactly as it was when the centre was closed and the work transferred to Goonhilly. It is a very interesting place to visit if you get the chance, additionally the beach and scenery is lovely and if you go on a Wednesday you will also be able to include a matinee at that exceptionally lovely open air theatre on top of the hill nearby, The Minack !!!
