The car is in OK condition for the age, and has around 50k miles.
I have since got another quote for 800. I think I am going to have to go for it, it would cost more than that to replace.

Hi phi666, If you can wait your time & have access to another car in the meantime, Type in 247 Motor parts, then type in the part you need, it explains everything in detail what to do, within 24hrs you will receive a reply from what ever scrap yard that has one, another way to go about this, bye a copy of Motor Trader look at the back pages there are people that will exchange your power steering pump for a recon unit that is Guaranteed, Has the unit/Pump been leaking? what was said to make the say it was the pump? have you lost any fluid from the pump? have you had the system bled? the money you have quoted to me seems one hell of a price you can do better than that I can assure you, What part of the UK are you? do not be beaten or give up a good P.C because of what you have been informed by price, I will wait for your response then I will see If I can help you.
Not only me but a lot of people that use this site try & study the problem, Diagnose the fault, at times we get it wrong but if we can save the majority of the people that ask the questions money, the Object satisfy us, Myself, I do not like people getting ripped off, It only takes a quick Question to get an answer, My Source, repairing cars in my spare time, but cars do change in spec so at times we old farts get it wrong, but its not for the want of trying. I hope that answers your Question, & No, I do not take offence.
Hi Again, go into GOOGLE UK Type in Vauxhall Zafira power steering/ pump, you will be directed to EBay with 5 on going sales ranging from 40 up to 70 used, do not be bothered about the used comment as I use this site very often & never had any problems, If you can manage to fit it yourself ( Its not that hard to sort out) you can do the job in about 3/4hrs, but if you think the job is a bit too much for you to tackle, get someone to do it for you at the most a 100, at that price is a bit high but it will be far cheaper that what you have been quoted, but I still have my doubts weather it is the pump, how did this problem start?
