This thread explains "matter", insofar as it can be explained !!

That it is the answer required by the compiler is indisputable; that it a good clue is debatable.

Possibly I did not express myself very clearly.

I accept that the answer is matter (snarled/matted) but found the clue unconvincing and , sadly, typical of the Telegraph recently.
As with Bea I have also not seen the actual puzzle.

What's wrong- makes you think what's the Matter. Yet, where does snarl come into it- it is like a red herring?! No wonder kayakamina thought it may be something else + no wonder methought it could be mutter( snarl + sounds like matter). Just made an educated guess as did not have the crossword infront of me. An intelligent person who is kind is a genius- therefore BigDave44- you are a genius :-) Always have much respect for Kayakamina, too :-) Most people here are truly lovely as well as knowledgeable:-)Yet, will ignore those who do not fit into the first category.
