Strange poo habit

My 3yr old male lab has just started to develop a strange poo habit where when he has to go he pushes his bum high up against a tree or a bush and poos up against it. He has just started doing this the last few times he's been out. About a year and a half ago he had to have an operation to remove a pair of tights from his gut. (He still steals and eats socks, other lab owners will sympathize im sure!) He had to have a large amount of gut removed and because of this he never passed a firm poo, until recently when I finally got him firmed up with the help of dry toast! Now that he is passing firm poos he wants to do it as high up as possible and against something. This is not something I want him to keep up as its very hard to pick up and looks disgusting! Anyone know why he's doing this? Thanx

My wife's pug used to do this as well - usually up a wall! Not as bad as the time he crapped on the jumper some kids were using as a goalpost though!

I have been dog sitting for a terrier which does this a lot of the time, apparently he always has!  It is irritating, I agree.

When I was 9 we had a Cairn Terrier and he always insisted 'doing it' up against something firm like the wall or a telegraph pole. When we got him back home we were invariably sent outside to wash it all off his fur, usually with the garage toilet brush.Oh you have brought back childhood memories. But no I don't know why he did it. Sorry.

I once had a labrador that did this, and after a while I suspected that he was trying not to do it where people would walk.  He had picked up the fact that there were places where I did not want it done.  This was confirmed when he had to go into kennels for a couple of weeks.  He had done nothing at all in his pen (he had been regularly exercised outside) and when I collected him, he couldn't wait to put his bum up into the hedge out of the way.
