hi paultintin, i had exactly the same problem as you with a 1996 vauxhall calibra 2.0 litre 16 valve ecotec. the problem turned out to be the cam sensor. they are quite easy to change it took me about 20 mins. the guy who plugged the ecu into the tec2 computer said that when the engine won't rev above 4500 revs that is sure to be the cam sensor that has failed. and he was correct when i changed the cam sensor there was no more problems.

cheers i had heard about the vauxhall cam sensor problem only thing is with the vectra u have to remove the air box cam cover and engine mount to remove the sensor so will be right pain. but cheers for helping to comfirm this.
hi paultintin, you should be able to change the cam sensor by just removng the top half of the cam belt cover, you will then see the sensor it is held in place by 1 or mybe 2 small torque bolts and an electrical connector.

cheers will take a look but pretty sure i cant get to it unless i take complete side off cam cover and to do this got remove alot of stuff
