Once the computer is set up with anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall etc. and set up to run checks and receive upgrades etc. it would seem the best way is switch on and surf. He will very soon get the hang of it and become addicted, then you can show him how to save sites to his favourites and how to clean up cache and cookies etc. To start with he needs very little knowledge and lots of patience. Good luck to him.
I agree with DaisyMae, getting on there and not being afraid of clicking.
I`m over 60 and been using computer for three years now.
I made quite a few mistakes and caused myself a few problems in the first few months, then I found this site and learned a lot from it.
Also googling problems, I haven`t come across a problem yet that someone else hasn`t had. the answer is always there.
One bit of advice, from Ethel, that I found invaluable was right click! right click! right click!
I`d had my computer a few weeks before seeing Ethel`s advice, and I`d never used right click until then.
What a difference it made to my computing.

I'm 73, and started by doing a 'CLAIT' course at the local college, and going in to their library every day. I got carried away, and went in every day.
Since then I have done all sorts of things for myself and other people.
My advice is... Get him to go to the internet and play with it, and bookmark AnswerBank, there are people out here who will gladly help him with any problem he may get. With their help I have downloaded many helpfull programs, and have been help with many problems, when I felt like throwing my computer out the window.
Tell him not to be afraid to try.
Wish him good Luck, and happy surfing.
