My 12 year old neice has just died in a car accident and she was so loved by her parents (and everyone).
It's just awful. sadly, lessons are not being learned either.

How awful Jillius, how can anyone ever recover from something like that.
The Similarities between Sanam and baby P, seem to be the babies were fine, healthy and happy until their moronic mothers took up with new men.
What kind of mother would stand by or participate in the abuse of their own child by a boyfriend.

I think the thing that most people (including me) can't fathom is the the thought process that sadists have when they attack kids. It goes against our biological instincts to harm children.
I mean - say if you see a child in distress - even if you are a stranger to them, you're natural instinct is to help, right? So when you read a story like this where the baby actually DIES...it just makes you feel impotent and enraged.
I literally don't get it. Stories like this severely test my opposition to the death penalty.

I'm not so sure, sp1814. When a new lion takes over as alpha male of the pride, the first thing he does is kill all the cubs so that in future all the kids will be his (when people say animals behave better than humans, don't believe it). Given that these cases involve stepfathers, I suspect something similar is going on. And I'm not sure that mothers know how to resist violent males.
sorry, B00, I didn't quite put that right - they kill the rivals first. Then they kill the offspring - and that's hardly necessary but they're doing it not just to become leader of the pride, which they've already done, but to eliminate all traces of other males forever. I'm guessing the instincts of these human killers are moving along the same lines, and I'm guessing there is some instinct involved. Just think of all those fairytales involving wicked stepmothers. They represent kids' fears that their mother will die and be replaced by another woman, who'll abuse them in order to promote her own children with their father. I'm not defending these people at all, just saying there's something subconscious going on that overrides what would normally be your natural sympathy for little kids. They can go to jail for a very long time indeed as far as I'm concerned.
They are inadequate, useless people who are sick in their minds and I don't know if they could be ever rehabilitated in prison. So, although I am fairly liberal and a compassionate person about most things, I see prison in their case as keeping them away from decent members of society.
The only good thing is that other inmates will hand out their own brand of punishment to these two, and it feels good to think they will have to always be looking over their shoulder for years to come.
