hot water tank

i have hot water running from the over flow pipe at the top of the tank returning into the main cold tank in the loft can anybody please explain why

 To me its seems as the thermostat has failed and causing the water in the tank to "boil" and the only way the hot water to escape is that way. Be careful because this can be sometimes dangerous. I have once read that the same thing happened to a couple, and the tank in the loft fell throught the ceiling, scalding and killing them in their bed.

I dont want to seem alarmist, but get it checked out.

ntl-marc, I've heard it all now! I have once read that there are only optimists, realists and pessimists now you've invented alarmists. But just in case shianne, check the tank isnt directly above your bed. Thats me being a realist and taking everything into account.
