Why is it that christians fear death? Surely going to meet god & jesus would be something to be joyous about? Certainly leaving loved ones behind would be sad or of concern. But surely christians, who have lived their life according to the bible, would have no fear as they know heaven is - well, heaven. I would have thought any christian who is dying would be envied & congratulated, as they are going to the coveted heaven. After all, that's where the church has taught them all their life that that's where everything will be ok, after living a life that perhaps contained suffering, hardship, sorrow or illness. Or even if their life was one big happy roller coaster, heaven is still a million times better.
USALady, MWB is quite right: you should read some religion-debunking books. Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris is aimed exactly at you - the American believer. You have to be perverse not to see the sense in it.
I place my three favourite atheist authors in this order of style:
Harris is calm and incisively logical.
Dawkins is equally logical but sometimes delights us by showing passionate exasperation at some of the lunacies of religious belief.
Hitchens is the real rottweiler who goes straight for the jugular and - changing the metaphor - takes no prisoners. At the same time you can't fault his facts or reasoning.
I am not religious, do not believe in the afterlife, but am not afraid of death in any way (although must admit to the fear of suffering whilst dying). I can't see that death in itself is frightening.
Just sitting here thinking that if it was proved there was an afterlife I would probably really worry more about death, if that makes sense. The fear of going into something I didn't know anything about would be quite upsetting!!!
Yes, supposing I hated it wherever I went. And it would be very boring because is heaven only open to Christians - I like variety - no more discussions about whether there is a god or not, and no more threads on the News topic about Moslems!!! ;o)
