You did nothing wrong. You just didn't think in a different manner. Look at how Shaneystar2 gave you the wordplay for the crypyic resolution which gave the word required for the definition! H=henry, au=gold, the shire was BERKS, could have been HERTS, but Chambers would have resolved the answer. In all cryptic crosswords there is a definition and a wotdplay that lead both lead to the correct answer. Sorry if I have been patronising, but given your name I thought I'd try and give guidance.
