Lesbian clothes

I know one can't generalise but why do some gay women wear very masculine clothes and cut their hair really short? What is the psychology behind this? Is it a signal to other gay women? Or to men? Or is it to experience a sense of community? I have many gay friends and realise that this is not the way everyone dresses. Why the need to masculinise themselves, when actually in many ways they are more feminine than a lot of straight women!

I always wondered this about camp, gay men.  I mean, (no rude jokes please) why do some gay men have feminine high pitched voices and hand gestures?

My auntie is a lesbian and she and her girlfriend dress in the masculine way, short hair n all, look terrible in my opinion but each to their own I suppose?

Pickle - I understand that tranvestite's don't have to be gay, but surely, at some stage, transexuals are?

I mean, I'm female and attracted to men, but if I wanted to become male I would still be attracted to men, thus would that make me gay post op, though straight pre op?

Or.... if I were to be attracted to women but still wanted to be changed to become male, would that make me straight or gay pre or post op?

I always thought it was just how you viewed yourself.  But now I think I am confusing myself.

 Natalie-1982  i think transexuals think that they are born with a male brain but have a female body or vice versa, so they would not consider themselves gay as their body doesn't reflect who they really are- until after the op that is. I think thats right but don't quote me on it as i'm not a transexual.

I really do feel for males/females who feel they are in the wrong bodies.

It must be torture going through all those emotions & deciding whether or not to go through the trauma of having an operation, to make them look & feel how they should be.

i could never work that one out either, nor have been given a straight answser!! I mean I would have thought to be a lesbian you fancy women and want to attract women, so whats the point in looking like a geezer?

My best friend went out with a fully post op transexual, and there is someone I know from the clubs I frequent that is a female to male transexual, but now has had the snip is a beard weraing transvestite. Work that one out

To go back to Scarletts original question, there must be a lesbian ABer out there who can answer this question surely?!!!

One of our neighbours is a lesbian (she has only just confided in me, otherwise I'd never have guessed).

In a conversation, she told me, in her own words "I can't stand to see dykey, butch looking gay women - you know the ones who advertise it".

So there's one personal opinion!
