A friend of mine, reckons that Staines bridge was the first crossing of the river thames in something like 1048 ad. Does anyone know if he is correct? I have looked on the web to try to find out and all sites mention the bridge but none say wether it was the first crossing of the thames. Any ideas please!!

There seems to have been a bridge on this site since Roman times. The first one was probably made of wood. You can read a bit more here:
