R?I?E?
I have two possible solutions here.
REIVER or RAIDER.
I prefer REIVER because Chambers gives a definition of REIVE as to plunder or rob, whereas for RAID it just gives "to make a raid on" or "to go on a raid".
Does anybody else agree with my thoughts?

I must admit to entering raider initially without giving it further thought, but I agree that reiver is an interesting alternative.
As I don't bother entering the completed crosswords, it won't affect me, but will look with interest at the solution when published! :O)

Thank-you. Bloody-minded so & so that I am, I tend to think REIVER would the proper answer to the question as posed, but is obviously not the one they're looking for.
Does anyone ever get the impression that "they" get the answers wrong themselves sometimes? I mean, apart from when "they" get their Nimrods mixed up with their AWACs, inaugurate J. Edgar Hoover as president of the USA (or was it appoint Herbert Hoover as director of the FBI?) & kill-off Stirling Moss in 1962?
No, you're right; I'm just getting paranoid.
