another name for coop is pen, pen is inbetween the word it which forms the word inept- so you are correct :-)
Intends looks right, too :-)
Scratch is also correct ;-)
Not sure about the last one, so wait here for a cryptic expert. Like you, am also still learning :-)

17a I assume this has something to do with a dog scratching at something like a door if it wants to be let in.
