A good example is 15a in today's FT (12979): Hopper appearing as copper in "Gone".

the clue-writer wants you to think of actor Dennis Hopper as a policeman in a film, it seems. If you keep thinking that way, you'll be lost!

Think differently - think of the element copper (CU) in (inside) a word meaning "gone" (LOST), so you have LO(CU)ST which is a "hopper" or insect.

It takes practice but you have to be patient and hang in there.
Very well explained dr b.
There lies madness
Ethel - well, yes, but we all have to be go mad over something, don't we?
'have to go mad." don't know where the "be" came from.
There lies (madness) is an angram of Ethel's Ire!
Careful, Sir Harry - remember what happened yesterday when you made a (sort of) witty interjection !!
Flower - have a read of this little site - the *lateral thinking* will then start to make sense !

As dr b says above, it just means "think differently". The compiler has set you a challenge and the fun in doing the cryptic crossword is getting the solutions right !
flower1948 - please pardon the intrusion.

Dave - I have never made a witty whit dae ye ca' it in my life (sort of)
