Didnt think an EPA was still legal (after oct 2007), believe its been replaced by an LPA (lasting power of attorney) and this has to be registered with a solicitor to be a legal document.
Im sure someone with far more knowledge than me will put you right.

Yes, there are now different types of LPA.

It would depend what the solicitors were doing as to what they would charge and I'd ask for a breakdown as to the fees for what you actually wanted doing.

Would the high fees involve solicitors actually being appointed as the attorney or for particularly complicated ones with all kinds of conditions?

Can you give a link to some of the sites?

chas 2008 ..I got it wrong it's LPA as the
rules changed ..but on the net you can buy
one , my friend had a will maker come to
his house and it was legal ....
EPA is still legal ..as they can't regate on
the legal stuff in the UK ..
People make loads of money out of others
misery and have the trappings to prove it !!
It's now an LPA as others have said. You can do it yourself for nothing apart from the 150 fee to the OPG when it comes to register it.

Just download the application form from the OPG site, plus the guidance notes. Spend a while reading and understanding them and away you go. Don't rush it - no-one else will.

I know - I've just done it. I was a bit on tenterhooks that I'd done something wrong but it worked out OK.

The only fee you might have to pay is for someone to certify that the donor knows what they are doing - even then a friend or neighbour is acceptable if they agree.
I should say I looked at the site that charges you 30. All it does is present you with a series of online questions to answer - mirroring the application form and presents you with a neatly printed version of it.

At least a solicitor will give advice, etc.
no, that price is over the top. I paid 900 quid for two wills, and 4 lpa's (personal welfare and property and affairs for both of us) at a solicitor. I was paying for them to certify that i had capacity and to fill in the forms for me This is on top of the 150 (each lpa) to register them
Frankly, I would say that 1k is over the top. I would shop around if you are not confident enough to do it yourself (remember, you will need to have your LPA certified). I would think you can get one done for less than 200.

Granted a grand is OTT, but remember, solicitors have certain compliance regulations that the internet just does not have. Furthermore, if it all goes wrong a solicitor has PI insurance that will put it right (or pay damages) - the internet will not.

As for people making money out of others' misery, well, my plumber charged me the going rate to fix my boiler when it broke, but no one considers that is wrong. My gran had a private hip replacement, but that also is not wrong. So why lawyers?
also when i had my will and LPA's done i was happy, not miserable!
