We are just about to order a VW Touran (the basic model) on contract hire for 3 yrs doing 15000 miles per year. We were going to go for the 1.9 diesel but someone has mentioned it may be cheaper to go for the 1.6 petrol instead. This would mean the monthly payments would be cheaper and of course the fuel but would the cost of filling up more often out way the effect? What do you think?

We don't know the price for the petrol yet but the diesel one does 20MPG more than the petrol. I think the petrol will be around 1000 more expensive to buy than the diesel but I just wanted people's views on this.

I never stall my petrol car.

Unless you do over 25000 miles per year, at least, petrol is now the cheaper option.

When diesel was less than half the price of petrol I had diesel cars.

I tigwig, The Touran 1600 & 1900 re the same body, weight & size but a different engine, from the point of view of the motor the name says it all " Good Quality" if given the opportunity go for the 1900 for the size of the motor you will need that size of engine to be comfortable & not looking for power that you have not got especially when the need to accelerate. the derv is also the best option.
Diesel is for trucks and buses.

There is no cred in a diesel powered car.
