flying geese

When you see geese (probably other birds too) flying in that 'V' or arrow shape is it random who goes where in the formation or would it always be the same bird leading it? Do geese live in packs and if so is it one male with several females?

I remember as a child asking my Dad why is there always a bird at the front,he said it was the only one that had a map..getting back to the topic of geese,we used to take the children past a particular farm on the way to our parents, but one day the geese were out and they would'nt let us past and as it was avery narrow lane we had to turn around and go back home....just imagine having to tell your parents that the geese would'nt let you past.
