filling up a diesel car with unleaded

Hi, a friend filled a diesel car with unleaded. She is quite distraught as the car was not hers and is wondering what is needed to rectify the situation (the car went a little way before spluttering to a stop) and what the likely cost will be. The car is an Audi A4.

Was there any diesel left in the tank to dilute the unleaded petrol?

Diesel acts as a lubricant for the engine as well as a fuel so if the car had managed to travel a long distance (impossible on pure unleaded) major damage could occur.

It sounds like damage may have been averted and with luck all that is required is the tank being siphoned and replaced with diesel.

Running a diesel on petrol is much worse than running a petrol engine on diesel because of the lubrication issue - get it checked out by a mechanic ASAP!

If the car didn't travel to far then all that she has to do is get the car to a mechanic so he can flush out the tank and fuel system, to remove all trace of the petrol then prime it with deisel, but if the car ran for too long it may well of damaged the pistons and then that will be expensive but a simple flush out and prime should be pretty cheap.
