My partner and i split summer 2008 and he left, however he hasn't contributed to the mortgage of 600 pounds per month but i have changed over to interest only and now pay 400 per month. My ex is still named on the mortgage as i cannot re-mortgage on my own. I am a working single mum of a 6 yr old and am struggling, as is most of the population! Just wondering if i can put a claim in for some kind of housing benefit or such like! Many Thanks
a mortgage is a legally binding contract.. I do not think your partner can just run off at the first opportunity and avoid paying it...
I suggest you track him down and explain the situation and tell him he is 50% liable for the mortgage as much as you are.. and until such a time his name is removed legally he is obliged to pay up! A mortgage is a long term agreement and should not be entered lightly... he cannot just decide he has changed his mind!!!
By the way, because you're joint owners, your ex is not 50% liable, he 100% liable, as are you if mortgage payments are not kept up - this is called Joint and Several Liability!
