My son has been given residency of his two children due to the mother attempting suicide and having alcohol and drug problems. He paid for the services of a solicitor and barrister at the last two court hearings. He has to return to court in six weeks and again at a later date. The solicitor is saying this will cost him another�5000. My son works full time so is not entitled to legal aid. The mother has never worked and does get legal aid. The children are at risk with her. They have been with my son and his wife since the first of January. She has hardly bothered to try to see them since then but now wants them back. Mostly because they are her only form of income. It is all so unfair. My son just wants to keep his children safe. Is it risky to buy a DIY kit and try to fight in court himself.

I am sorry to say, but yes, extremely so. Whilst the court will be as helpful as they can to your son, I regret to say that a legal team actually doing the cross examination and submissions on the law will make a huge difference, particularly where something so important is concerned.

I appreciate it is expensive and unfair, but I think it could be a false economy if he decides to go it alone.

Thankyou for your opinion. I think you are probably right. Obviously the children are all important in this matter but our greatest fear is that we will pay out this money and still lose. We as a family have lived with the worry of the childrens safety for years. Now my son actually has them we dont want to make any mistakes. I made a mistake when I said that my son has had them since January 1st. I should have said December 1st. Thankyou again. It needs serious thought.
