Interviewing an asian man for vacancy.

On introduction he refused my hand-shake saying "it's against his religion" to make physical contact!

His CV is in the bin......can't have that in my business!

I guess you must be a woman then?
If so, I guess he must be Muslim, in which case he is correct. Physical contact between any unmarried man and woman in Islam (& also Orthodox Judaism & possibly Buddhism) is forbidden. This includes handshaking.
Like any religion, different people take it on to different degrees of strictness. Many modern Muslims living in the West understand that hand-shaking is a common greeting especially in business and thus relax this rule, but some people really cannot do it. This article is interesting: http://www.rukhsanakhan.com/article-etiquette. htm
I think you need to respect his wishes, plus although it sounds weird, if you look at it from his POV he is being respectful towards you by NOT shaking your hand.
If you turn him down for the vacancy because of this factor alone (without taking into ******* his experience, qualifications and ability to do the job as advertised) then you could possibly be accused of religous discrimination.
If he's not suitable for other reasons too, then don't worry about it, but he may be perfect for your company, you never know!
the asterisks are supposed to say "account" but i made a typo, and then it said something else entirely!! ooops....
I totally agree with you 'terambulan' i would of done the same thing.

So I suppose that when he collapses in the street,he will refuse to let a female para~medic (or Doctor) treat/touch him.
Will he wait for a male para~medic(or Doctor) to arrive before he dies?
No, MrVeritas - those circumstances are permitted, as it is for Jewish ladies.

johny5 - I bet this Asian man had better knowledge of English grammar than you demonstrate:

"I totally agree with you 'terambulan' i would of done the same thing"
Now , now ,docspock, no need to be rude on here or racist
either. You are of course entitled to your opiniions , but you don't have to share them with us.
Apologies --opinions.
If the guy wants to take his beliefs to extremes that exclude him from daily elements of the culture he lives in, that's tough on him. Plenty of Moslems and Jews shake hands quite happily, so this person should get over himself.
i'm actually quite dismayed at the lack of open-mindedness here. No physical contact between unmarried people of the opposite sex is quite a fundamental aspect of several religions, not just Islam. The way I see it, if it's that important to him or whoever then let it be! It doesn't reflect on who they are as a potential employee or indeed as a person.
In my job, I shake hands with people I don't know most days and although its the general accepted thing to do, I personally don't see it as necessary and our meetings go just as well whether we do or don't shake hands. In fact, there are many (mainly men) that I'd much rather not skae hands with as they're sweaty, limp and not pleasant at all!
Ethel i'm so sorry my english grammar is not up to your standards, I write the way i speak so if you dont like it keep your opinion to your self please.

My opinion "dont shoot me for it" If you come to this country you should speak, dress and act like us.

Take the polish and slovakians we dont have a problem with them, Why? because like us we dont have stupid beliefs and religious...... i'm gonna stop before i say something i should'nt.

Since time is money & the business is customer relations. Him explaining his social-skills to customers will cost them extra to listen........and I'm not out to cause my clients un-necessary expense!

Shredded & binned ......... end of!

God you could've at least recycled it Terambulan. Think of the environment at least if not this man's rights!!

Johny5, I can't bring myself to warrant someone like you with a response, but you disgust me and should be taught a lesson.
