travel with baby
8 Answers
I have a month old baby and live in Essex. I hav e a freind in South London who has just had a baby and I'd like to visit them. I told my partner that I would get the train over there - a 2hr journey - with out baby in the new baby carrier we've just bought. We used it for the first time the other day and baby fell asleep, I guess she liked the warmth and movement.
Anyway, he has said he does not feel comfortable with me going with her at such a young age. Mainly in case she cries all the way and it annoys other passengers who, in turn, may lash out at me. He also mentioned if she needed feeding or changing. I'm sure she'd be ok for 2 hrs though.
WHat do other ppl think?

As I understand, you want to take your baby out for the day - a journey which involves being on a train with available changing facilities. As long as you feel fit enough to go, then just make sure you have what you need with you and enjoy your day.
What people are likely to lash out at someone with a young baby?
Maybe I am sheltered in that I don't live in or near London, but I can't see that happening somehow.
Sounds to me that he has some control issues - he is right, she may need feeding or changing, babies don't always work to a plan! But I still don't see how that is a problem. If you were hanging out the window of a train in central Mumbai maybe ;o).
It is actually easier to travel with them when they are little like that than when they get older and more restless - a four week old will sleep most of the time.

I used to travel a lot with mine. When middle one was 5 weeks old I felt I had to go to Isle of Man from Bedford to see my Mum. I had a lift to Birmingham then caught coach to Liverpool then Overnight ferry to Isle of man .Baby in carrycot, toddler on reins tied firmly to me in case i dozed off and he tried a runner. ( I didn't and he was good as gold ) I never looked back after that trip used to go all over. You will find people will be very helpful and the time you have with your friend will be doubly precious because you made the effort.
Velvetee - He works long hours 6 days a week. Sunday is our only day to spend proper time together so I'd rather go in the week and keep our time together free.
Thanks for your answers. I think he's just being over worried - he tends to think of worst case scenario in all cases where as I am the total opposite - always think things will be fine. It can cause problems because I never know which of us is right or if we're both being too extreme at opposite ends of the scale!

50 years ago, my friend and I would put our babies (then aged about 6months old) in their prams and make our way to the local train station. After putting the prams in the guards van we would then ,feed and change the babies on the train. The journey to a nearby town took about an hour. We then went round the market and shops, did a weeks shopping for about 3 ;(the prams in those days had compartments in the bases to hold all theshopping). Then we made our way back onto the train, changed the babies and fed them. No problem at all. Thanks for bringing these memories back. Good luck with your trip.
slightly confused as to what the problem is?
i lived in london for years and had my babies there, travelled all the time from london to inverness, 9 hours on a train.
you get on the train sit for a couple of hours and you get off again, feed the baby as if you were at home and change her on a spare seat or on your knee (may need to practice lol)
take a changing bag with all you will need, enjoy and have a good day out

hey
i wouldn't worry about it.
i took my baby on the plane at 3 months old myself.
as long as your organised. you might not be in the best of routines yet with a 4 week old but you will know roughly when feeds are due and nappy changes.
if you can try and change the nappy before you get on the train and get a train just after feeding time if you can
i was lucky, my daughters feed was perfect timing, her bottle was when we were taking off so her ears didn't suffer. only problem i had was changing her..... there was no space in toilet to change her
i had a spare seat next to me so i tried to be discreet and do it in the seat as it was emty and she had a wet one.
i got everything ready for a quick change.... took the nappy of an a sprout size turd flew out, then she started peeing so i pressed the nappy back on. i started getting hotter and hotter as the few business men across from me were peering over there big newspapers. she finished peeing and i scooped the turd back in the nappy. hardyly wiped here and put the fresh nappy on here asap!!!!
as soon as we landed i got her to the toilets and cleaned her properly
but once speaking to people i found out they also change there baby in the seat as there is no facilities on the plane. felt daft after that as i was trying to be so discrete
but go to your friends. the sooner you get used to going out and about the better. its very scary going out with a baby.
