What is the best part of los Angeles to base a family of five for a Califfornia holiday? I've heard that some of the areas are not suiable for families.

Santa Monica's is worth considering, right near a safe family beach, with coast guards, you can rent rollerblades and scate along towards Venice Beach, and there's a pier with a fun-fair. Lots of accommodation around the area, good family eating places and a nice shopping mall. Also, its close to the airport and there are buses that take you into Beverly Hills and LA, cabs cost around $30.
