The 'presence' of a loved one...

Something sara said on a thread makes me wonder.....why-when we lose a loved one-do we feel their presence close to us?This is often the sensation that they are by our side or just looking over our shoulder.
Any thoughts or experiances ??

I don't recall dreaming about anyone I've lost, and I don't think I want to. I have occasionally remembered something about my dad, who died when I was 5. just a couple of years ago I suddenly pictured him in my mum's kitchen peeling an apple with a knife, and I remembered he used to try to get all the peel off in one piece.
no idea where that memory came from, but it is true.. he did used to do that with apples.
