Could it be Congo - it was out about 10 years ago. It was based on a Michael Crichton book and involved a team going to search for a team of people who had gone missing - though I think they were diamond hunters rather than researchers.

That film was on the telly the other night....I didn't catch it but Ron Pearlman was in it - Primal Force - was that the one you were thinking of tomhaze?
