What shrub can I grow in my shady corner?

Its fairly rich, but quite damp soil, and never in full sun, but gets reasonable light from about waist height upwards! I would like some sort of shrub, preferable flowering, that will grow to a maximum of about five foot tall. Does such a thing exist?

The only plants I can think of that like shade are 'Hostas' and 'Ferns'. Sorry I can't be anymore helpful.

Oh, and 'Fatsia japonica', The plants I have mentioned are mostly grown for their foliage, but 'Hostas' do have nice 'Lily-type flowers'.

Thanks, I like Hostas, but they dont really grow tall enough for what I want there. How big does the Fastia get? and what does it look like?

Fatsia grow about 300cm x 300cm, they are also very hardy and grow in most types of soil.

Try one of the Magnolia species.

For some color, consider either white or pink Bleeding Hearts.  If you like evergreens, try azaleas, rhododendrons, mountain laurels, cherry laurels, hollies, and yews which all take shade.  Many varities of ferns are attractive, as well...

Dwarf willows, including weeping varities and cypress do well in wet, shady areas... Always check your hardiness zone, however... Luck!

Being as its a corner that you'd like to grow the plant, this could create what's called a 'micro-climate', this could affect the hardiness of the plant quite significantly, as it could be protected/sheltered from frost and prevailing winds.

put in a pussy willow (salix caprea) once it is established prune hard in spring and have loads of pussies to have indoors with daffodils

Fuschia Genii is a hardy shrub that likes shade and it has beautiful 2 tone flowers of cerise and purple and light green leaves. A gorgeous plant.

In my shady corner - it's a big corner! - I have a mahonia which is in flower, white/pink dicentras (bleeding hearts), hydrangea, and a leucothoe which is an acid loving evergreen shrub so is in a large pot. Some small acers will do well in shade but autumn colour might not be so intense. Hypericums also do well in shade.
