My husband is a salesman, and despite the snow, went to a meeting 2.5hrs away from our home. He had a phonecall mid morning from his HR department, checking he had gone to work! He was told if he was not out selling he would not be paid! He has a meeting 4.5 hours away tomorrow, having to leave about 5 am. The snow is heavy now and I think he should stay home. His company don't seem to care about the safety of their staff...only about their sales figures! I am sure his contract does not mention adverse weather conditions....should he stay home??
I think that is disgusting, if the snow is so bad he should stay at home. My son has a similar problem, he drives for a living and worked a 13 hour day today in appalling conditions and his company did not even ring to see if he was OK. If it is really bad tomorrow your husband should not attempt a 4 and a half hour journey. If its that bad surely the meeting will be cancelled anyway.
i have kept my 2 salespeople in today and tomorrow [if the weather is bad] there is always another day to close a deal...i find that if i treat my employees well, they in turn treat me well and ALWAYS work with 100% commitment....thats the problem today im afraid to many companies treat their employees as just a number with no respect.....
Good answer, Stoke. That's exactly the way a decent manager handles it.
And every well-organised and managed company will look for who phoned in sick yesterday and check it out.
