Stage directions

Could anyone give me advice on how to give stage directions? I must write directions for the character Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet, but i dont know quite how to go about it.

picture the scene in your head like it's a film, and then give indications of positions, movements, body language, gestures, tone of voice, things like that.

out of curiosity, what's this for?

if you mean, how do you put them on the page, then its in brackets, usually italics after the character name before he speaks, eg, " Friar: (moving forward) hello "

Thank you, but its more i don't really know what how to portray and what to say at the right parts. Surely i am not expected to highlight every required movement of every sentence... right?! Argh!!

this is a strange question. Shakespeare actually gives stage directins - but not very detailed. At the opposite end of the scale you've got playwrights like George Bernard Shaw whose stage directions take up more space on the page than dialogue! Actors do not take very kindly to being told precisly when and where to move. However, if you want a good example of how to do stage directions have a look at any play by Harold Pinter
