80s kid's TV

I saw the Sky advert this week stating that "kids are the fiercest critics...that's why their television is so good".

To put this theory to the test, I stayed in yesterday afternoon and watched for about 4 hours of absolute rubbish.

80's kids TV was amazing. Rainbow, Teddy Ruxpin, Greenfingers, the incredibly violent but iconic Thundercats, Bagpuss (i'm sure the creators must have been tripping on acid), MASK, D.o.t.e., Trapdoor (PCP must have been involved, etc

The factual stuff on kids' TV today is very good though - Blue Peter is going through a golden age at the moment, and I urge you to catch The Really Wild Show simply for Nick Baker, the best wildlife presenter on the box.

I reckon a lot of modern kids stuff is great. My personal favourites being Tracey Beaker and the completely ace Raven. A lot of the stuff from when I was little is tripe! Turtles, Thundercats, Defenders and He-Man being cases in point. Watch them now and you can see they obviously thrown together by prgrammers safe in the knowledge that kids will watch anything! The stories and animation on Turtles in particular was rubbish! And He-man constantly moralising like the big girls blouse that he was. I think sometimes its all too easy to confuse nostalgia with quality. Apart from Transformer of course, which was Utterly Brilliant.

There was a really cool kiddies prog on ITV last year about 4pm ish called bing and bong or something, they were white it was only on for five mins and they flew off to the moon I think.

Tracey Beaker is good, I think we could do with more like the Magic School Bus or that one that nobody can remember Once Upona Time .... Life.  Tweenies always seems pretty popular with my neice and friend's kids, as does the timeless classic Thomas the Tank Engine.

I watch a lot of new kids stuff when I'm looking after my 4-yr old nephew. If anyone gets a chance to watch Blue Cow on Storymakers then you're in for a treat. Classic episode - Blue Cow climbs a tree! Quality! And Clifford the Big Red Dog rules!

I have '3 under 3' so CBeebies is our watching and that is fantastic (I can't stand Tweenies or Fimbles but I can see the merit in them for toddlers). The BBC decided (or were told) that younger children should not have to watch US made programmes and the quality of homegrown stuff is shining through. What does make me despair is that once they have grown out of CBeebies it's mostly back to US stuff, or gameshows involving gunge (I'm commenting on Saturday and weekday mornings rather than afternoons which I don't get to see). Look at the programmes that people have said are good above (Raven, Tracy Beaker etc) and I think they are all home made. More British wierd stuff please! It made us into the generation of sensible people we aresnurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt.
