being payed if off work due to bad weather

if an employee phones in to say he is not coming to work because of the snow and he is told by his boss to take the day off-then the employee turns up to pick up his wages!! but says he is not staying to do his shift- surely he shouldn,t expect to get paid should he?

thats what i said! apparently he contacted acas who said he should be paid. don,t believe he did contact them. don,t know how he had the cheek to go in just so he could collect his wages but refuse to work!

I would imagine they would risk getting a disciplinary as well for blatantly lying about not being able to get to work.

We have a policy to cover bad weather. If you don't come in you have to take it as holiday or unpaid. Having said that, this week bosses decided to pay those who couldn't make it in which cheesed off those who had struggled in. They have said this is "one off" incase nobody turns up next time there's a flake of snow.
Your man might have contacted ACAS but I bet he didn't tell the whole story i.e. the bit about turning up for his wages.

To summarise the relevant points (most picked up as above).
1) The employer is not obliged to pay him for the day and may have a policy to enable him to either take it as unpaid or leave.
2) The employer should consider disciplining the individual for failure to come into work when he evidently could. Sounds like a case for a first written warning, unless he's got a damn good reason.

thanks for that. i will relay all these replies to his boss. he certainly should get a warning. i work for a supermarket and we would get a counselling if we were to pull a stunt like that. although i don,t think any of my colleagues would be stupid enough to do what he did.
