have relatives in Oz and have you heard from them? All my cousins in Oz live in the Sydney area and haven't been affected by the fires but I'm sickened by the thought that some stupid people have re-ignited areas that were made safe by the authorities. I hope these people get done for murder.

With you all the way. People who set fire to the environment should be shot. I was cycling home one day last summer over a lonely footpath, and met a group of yoofs (scum). Can we borrow your phone to call the fire brigade mister? There's a fire back there. Scum, murderous environment-destroying scum. Obviously the death penalty for arson is a bit harsh, but it would be nice to think that a policeman with an arsonist in his sights might just go for the head.
Bush fires are devastating enough without arsonists.
I went to Sydney in Dec 93/94 and whilst there Sydney was surrounded by bush fires. I woke up one morning with slight breathing difficulties. Looked out the window and the sky was orangy grey. It was awful for those that lived on the outskirts.
It usually affects the wildlife the most but in this case the loss of human life is devastating.
