Actually in the last referendum (1999) the majority of Australians wanted to keep the queen.

as I recall the referendum was a bit loaded (by the royalist PM at the time). The result wasn't necessarily representative.

The Yes (to abolishing the Monachy) vote failed to gain a majority in five of the six Australian states. Only Victoria voted Yes with an extremely slim 50.1 per cent majority.

the only alternative the referendum offered, as I remember, was a president elected by parliament - as opposed to direct election by the public as in the USA. As the PM, John Howard, knew, this wasn't what republicans wanted, so they stayed away. Monarchists enthusiastically voted No. But it was a loaded choice.

in my history lessons, the australians lost lots of lives helping us British win the 2nd world war - so YOU can live in freedom as you do.

It wouldn't help for us all to donate to assist these people.
