The 80 Gig version of the console still supports PS2 games, but it doesn't play them in the way the 'old' 40 Gig used to. Instead the PS2 games are played in an emulator built into the consoles firmware. The firmware has recently been upgraded so if you have any difficulties playing PS2 games on the 80 Gig version just update the firmware in the settings.

The box for the latest PS3s says backwards compatibly isn't supported, even on the 80 Gig version, but there's an option for it on the 80 version's system settings, but not the 60.

The 60 Gig version does not have this emulator built into its firmware pack.

Just a note, PS2 slim was never backwards compatible either, so the PS3 slim due later this year (originally Christmas but maybe 2010 due to financial mess in the world) will probably not play PS2 games.
Almost right.

The older 60GB model is fully backwards compatible and the 80GB newer one is not compatible at all - even with the firmware update
