how do i stop smoke coming into living room?

we have just tried to open our coal fire up to save on gas.we have cleaned chimney took off pot and everytime we light coal and wood with firelighters we slighty get some smoke into living room.we have used smoke lighters and the draw is good any ideas??

when we have a fire we have to leave the lounge door open just a little bit else the fire smokes in to the room never had these problems before double glazing no drafts any more
You took the pot off could be the answer. I believe that pots were put on to reduce the downdraft.
if chimney was cleaned proffesionaly it shouldn't smoke. Your chimney may need relining depending on age of house/when it was last done. if your chimney had the round closed top chimney pots on then yea it needed removing.

Obviously if the pot had a closed top and was fitted to 'close' the chimney when it was taken out of use it had to be removed. But if it was the open type it was probably fitted to reduce downdraft.
Spinning chimney pots would draw the smoke up the chimney.
