It is sad that John Nettles has decided to call it a day as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby.

Who would be a good replacement? I have heard Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) from Foyle's War, mentioned.

What will happen to his screen wife Joyce Barnaby ((Jane Wymark) and his screen daughter Cully Barnaby (Laura Howard)?

I wonder if high profile actors ever consider the livelihoods of their fellow actors, when they withdraw from a long running series such as this?

This is a matter of opinion of course. Perhaps John Nettles is old enough to hang up his truncheon now?

Of course MSM seems to make a lot of use of superannuated actors so he might appear as a villain some time.

As for a replacement, whoever takes over will make the role different anyway. The trend in Morse and Taggart of the no 2 taking over when the big man goes might be repeated.
Some actors just make the role their own as in John Nettles case as DCI Barnaby and he will be missed but he has to retire sometime! The lead role could be given to Daniel Casey {Troy} Barnabys sidekick and then they can bring in someone new to partner him! Maybe they could give it to a female as most of the TV Detective series have women partners! Barnaby''s daughter left when she got married, so Barnaby and his wife could retire somewhere peaceful where there are less murders and crime than there was in MIdsomer!!

Oh! I do hope not, I am not being sexist or racist, but I hate this PC (sorry for the pun) casting that seems so prevalent today.

It is for this reason that the 'Bill' has been spoiled, ie must have the obligatory Female senior officer, Black senior officer, Asian officer, Gay officer etc, etc.
Can't see Troy taking over - he's too young - at least Lewis was middle aged when he took over.

Gutted tho - love MSM, have it on Sky plus and watch one an evening (they tend to be 2 parters at the mo).

Thank god for Sky TV.

I think the relationship between nettles and wymark is believable - not sure I'd like another actor to take over the role and it will feel as if she's being unfaithful!!

Yes I know - its only a TV programme, its not real!
Well for one thing, they certainly need a blinking murder squad in that murderous place would one DCI be enough?! I read somewhere that in 12 years he has solved nearly 200 murders!

Im not sure about Kitchen. I think he is great in Foyles war, but MSM might not be for him.

How about.
Kenneth Branagh I thought he was great in Wallander
James Purefoy all the ladies like him

?
How about Myleene Klass - she's doing everything else.
anotheoldgit! I agree with you about the sexist racist etc! I was being ironic mentioning a woman partner! Most of the Crime series think it is obligatory to introduce women colour etc into the programmes and this has spoiled the format! Keep Midsomer male and macho!!
Barnaby is macho?

I hadn't noticed

What about Richard Briers ?
